Not so Cool Runnings

A few months ago I decided to challenge myself to my first 5K.  These seem to be very popular, not only to raise money for certain causes, but as a way for people to get fit.

I went shopping, I mean, I needed to, right?  I bought new running sneakers, socks and a jogging bra.  In my pea brain, I thought this was going to make me an expert.  I would whip off 3.1 miles easy, as long as I was dressed appropriately.

Who am I kidding?  Have you ever SEEN me run?  It is not pretty.  I labored around the block, practically tripping over my own feet.  Who invented running anyway?  This should not be a sport, it is a form of torture.  Whenever I passed anyone, or a car came by, I would try and look like I knew what I was doing.  I think they all knew better.  My cats can walk faster than I can plod along, I don't know who I believe I am fooling.

I decided to take a break after my first run, I mean, I don't want to overdo it.  The break has lasted about three months, and now with less than three weeks to go before my 5K, I am in a complete panic.

I have decided I will do "two-a-days," a term I heard from high school sports teams.  This means I am actually torturing myself in the morning and evening, and I am up to a whopping 1.6 miles at a stretch.  If I combined both the morning and evening stints, I will be able to finish this race, but I think the point of the 5K is to run it all at once.  Ah well.  Wish me luck.

After one mile I collapsed into my own driveway.  I figured I had my phone with me, so if I needed resuscitation, I could call into the house and have someone come out and revive me.

Lakeside

One of the things I love about living here in southern Maine is that I have the benefit of the ocean and lakes.  Last night my husband and I took a walk on the beach.  Foggy, refreshing, not many people, it was a nice, relfective time.  When we got there, a group of about twenty teens dressed in beautifu, long gowns and tuxedos were taking pictures on the waterfront before their prom.  Ahhh, brings back memories.

Today we are going to our family lakehouse about 45 minutes west.  Beautiful spot, everyone can fish, swim, ski, boat, or just kick back and read.  It is a time to unplug, a term I never thought I would know the meaning of.  Hope the weather cooperates for everyone.  Enjoy the day.

Snit and Wit: A Sad Revelation

Snit and Wit: A Sad Revelation

A Sad Revelation

I cried when I found out I was not actually in menopause.  Yet.  What about the hot flashes, the mood swings, the complete nastiness?  No, no and no.  I am actually experiencing, as some of you may also be experiencing, that cherished time called perimenopause.  Huh?  Yes, yes, there is a name for that blessed event BEFORE you actually start into the dreamlike state, called, as the past generation would say, "the change off life."

Oh.  How long does this last? I inquired of my doctor.  He shook his head and smirked.  Could last for years.  Is this guy a comedian on the side?  Years?  I cannot have this happening for that long.  I stared at him with my mouth hanging open.  What does he know of these things?  Has he been through this?  The sleepless nights, the waves of heat radiating from my feet to the top of my head, the weight gain that I KNOW is only attributed to the fact that I am this old, and NOT to the fact that I eat too much.  Please. I don't have years to wait this out.  My family will kick me out on the street, my employer will definitely find someone a bit calmer to work for them, and I will be homeless and trapped in a body that is not cooperating.

I am definitely in a snit.  I need a nap.

Happy Saturday.
